The Babe and I by David A. Adler is a great children’s book on the Great Depression and it incorporates the excitement of baseball. An activity to incorporate with the short book is to divide the students into groups (or just their table groups). Then, have them write and illustrate a multi-page newspaper. Instruct the students to include headlines about Babe Ruth like the boy in the story calls out but also have them include headlines and stories relating to the Great Depression. This is also a great time to teach students about newspaper writing. Be sure they include a flag, ear, headline, cut, dateline, etc.
